MOLLY R. STERN REVIVES CLOTHING LINE M.R.S.: Celebrity makeup artist Molly R. Stern, whose clients include Reese Witherspoon, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Connelly and Lily Collins, is reviving her contemporary apparel line M.R.S. after a 10-year hiatus. The brand, which sold in stores like Barneys New York and Fred Segal between 1998 and 2004, was beloved for its casual-sexy vibe and famously appeared on Jennifer Aniston for a Rolling Stone cover styled by L’Wren Scott, as well as in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s “Goddess” show.
“It was a really magical time, but we had no business infrastructure. I felt like I failed it,” said Stern, who was living in Brooklyn at the time. She moved back to her native Los Angeles in 2004, had three children and worked for Cover Girl for several years before realizing she missed the line. This time, she hired a chief financial officer, chief operating officer, production manager, patternmaker and social media manager and decided to offer the line directly to consumers via an e-commerce site.
M.R.S. offers dresses tops, bottoms, swimwear and intimates priced between $58 and $375. All pieces are made to order in Los Angeles. Although she’s not opposed to wholesaling the line again, she said, “The idea that I can reach my consumer directly is very exciting; that didn’t exist when I first started. We can learn more about her, and it’s less wasteful than building a huge inventory.” The site also offers videos of Stern giving styling advice for the more versatile pieces. The brand’s initials also stand for “Motivation, Radiance, Style” and Stern said she’s designing the soft, body-conscious yet comfortable pieces for the bodies of real women. “I’ve been doing makeup since I was 16 and I’m now 42. I’ve studied women, how we put ourselves out there and what we put on our bodies that makes us feel good.”
