CAFE SOCIETY: Monocle magazine is preparing to branch out into the realm of restaurant management by opening its first cafe in Tokyo next month. On Oct. 15, the world’s first Monocle Cafe will make its debut in Tokyo’s Yurakucho district along with a new Monocle Shop. “We’ve long been interested in doing a cafe and are excited by the prospects of doing something with such a talented team in Tokyo,” said Tyler Brûlé, Monocle’s editor in chief. “We want the Monocle Cafe to offer the best tastes and experiences found on our editors’ travels and this means great coffee, cozy classic dishes and excellent desserts.” The cafe and shop will have a combined area of about 2,600 square feet. Brûlé’s team currently operates Monocle Shops in London, Hong Kong, New York, Beijing and Osaka, Japan. The Yurakucho location will be Tokyo’s second Monocle Shop; its first Tokyo store is a small corner of a Franc Franc home furnishings store in the Aoyama neighborhood.
