The Hermès male is the subject of the first art exhibition at the house’s recently renovated flagship on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, interpreted by Erwin Wurm. The Austrian artist, known for his reappropriation of sculpture using humans and everyday objects, collaborated with Hermès’ men’s wear director Véronique Nichanian on the project, slated to open Sept. 25. Ending Oct. 4, the show will travel to Hermès stores around the world, including Miami, Frankfurt and Tokyo.
Of the 14 sculpture portraits, that include “The Hunter,” “The Judge,” “The Traveler” and “The Mathematician,” one image, “The Anarchist,” sees a formerly dressed gentleman standing barefoot on a horse’s back, a giant black crocodile Hermès travel bag in hand. The event marks the second dalliance between Hermès and Wurm, who presented a selection of works at the house’s stand at the Lyon Biennale in 2005.
