Moving Day for Students at Parsons The New School for Design

MOVING DAY: When students at Parsons The New School for Design end their fall semester on Dec. 16, a storied era will come to a close for its main campus building at 560 Seventh Avenue, which is shuttering and was recently sold to real estate developers. In January, returning students will begin classes in The New School’s just-completed, state-of-the-art University Center building at 65 Fifth Avenue. To mark the departure from 560, Simon Collins, dean of the School of Fashion at Parsons, is hosting a farewell party in the building on Thursday for alumni and faculty. “I expect there to be tears and I expect there to be laughter,” said Collins, reeling off the names of designers who have studied in the classrooms there: Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Jason Wu, Isaac Mizrahi, Derek Lam, Jenna Lyons, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez. Karan is expected at Thursday’s fete, as are Anna Sui, Chris Benz, Jeffrey Banks and Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs. Collins has printed up T-shirts for attendees that read either “You never leave Parsons,” or “School of Fashion 560,” courtesy of Esprit. Presumably, come the new year, Parsons will also have to think up a new handle for its Twitter account, which is Parsons560.
