PAINT BY NUMBERS: “I’m a black, white and gray person — but I can imagine crazy things in color. It’s my Indian side,” said Ramesh Nair, creative director of the French accessories firm Moynat, which marked the opening of its London store on Wednesday night.
The 2,000-square-foot shop is filled with color, from the robin’s egg blue vintage trunks on display, to the bright orange, blue or green leather bags and accessories on offer. Guests including Samantha Barks and Olivia Grant attended the party hosted by Nair and Moynat’s chief executive Guillaume Davin at the Mount Street shop, opposite the Connaught hotel.
Nair said the brand’s accent on color was also inspired by Pauline Moynat, who founded the Parisian trunk and luggage maker in 1849.
“She was the only woman in a world of mustachioed men,” said Nair, adding that he discovered all of the color after some sleuthing.
Pointing to the light blue vintage trunk on the ground floor, Nair said that he and his colleagues came across the color after scraping off the dark paint that covered it. Moynat, he said, often made trunks in bright colors, but when they changed hands or were passed to the next generation, the new owners would sometimes paint over them.
