MAGIC NUMBERS: Mykita is celebrating its 10 years in 2013, but the Berlin-based eyewear firm likes to mark less obvious numbers, having published commemorative brand books at year five and eight, with 11 also planned.  


Instead of a birthday gift, Mykita is getting something even better — its first U.S. store, due to come soon.


Mykita is also marking its decade with three short films debuting in August. Two of them show the making of frames — the stainless-steel Coco and the acetate Winona — while the third is a spot featuring many of the 190 employees working at the multilevel Mykita Haus, where all of the firm’s glasses are produced by hand.  


A select group, including designer and Mykita collaborator Damir Doma, got a sneak preview Tuesday night at a dinner and screening there.  


The meal, by chef Tim Raue, ended not with birthday cake but an interpretation of classic German Bienenstich, a dessert made with cream and caramelized almonds. It’s the same treat Raue served President Obama a few weeks ago while he was visiting Berlin.
