CELEBRATING MANDELA: The crush of pedestrians in New York’s Times Square will have more than neon lights and billboards to consider as of Thursday. In honor of Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday, which is also the international call-to-action Mandela Day, Times Square Arts and Times Square Advertising Coalition, in collaboration with the Tribeca Film Institute and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, will present “The Power of Words.” The short video installation will highlight the South African leader’s powerful words and teachings.
Supported by Montblanc, the film shows snippets of Mandela’s speeches colliding, floating and bursting onto a cosmic blue background created by Nabil Elderkin, Andrew van der Westhuyzen and Gregory Stern. After the one-time showing on the electronic billboards near Duffy Square Thursday at 7:15 p.m., it will be played on a continuous video loop in the Times Square Museum & Visitor Center at 1560 Broadway from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m.

Elderkin, four other filmmakers, the Tribeca Film Institute and Out of Africa Entertainment will team with children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to create short films based on quotes from Mandela’s teachings that will be released over the next nine months. Out of Africa Entertainment’s Kweku Mandela is spearheading this effort to pay tribute to his grandfather and to support the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s mission to reach future generations.
