TOP PRIZE: New Zealand’s sporting heroes are no strangers to Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday Honours Lists and this Diamond Jubilee, film director Peter Jackson of “The Lord of The Rings” fame can claim the title as well (he was knighted back in 2010).

But in what appears to be the first ever royal nod to an antipodian fashion player, the Queen’s 2012 list has just appointed New Zealand Fashion Week founder and managing director Pieter Stewart as a Dame Companion to the New Zealand Order of Merit in for her services to fashion and to the community.

A fashion industry veteran of over 30 years and the former chairwoman of St Margaret’s College Board Trust and deputy chair of the Independent Schools Association, Stewart, a former model, founded Pieter’s Model Agency and School in Christchurch in 1979. She served as associate editor of “Fashion Quarterly” from 1985 to 1987, before founding her own public relations firm in 1988 and then New Zealand Fashion Week in 2000 — the country’s premier fashion showcase, which is staged each September in Auckland.
