OLDHAM’S WORLD: Todd Oldham is collaborating with Sundance Institute on a custom line of limited-edition products exclusively for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, which takes place Jan. 16 to 26 in Park City, Utah.
This January marks the festival’s 30th anniversary, and Oldham lined up “Artist Editions” by Susan Sarandon, Anna Sui, Wayne White, Andrew Dosunmu, Dave Grohl and Miranda July, in addition to his own designed items. Sarandon, for example, created clever pie plates, while Sui designed a long, black suede fringe bag with butterfly appliqués and Grohl designed a rock ’n’ roll T-shirt.
“I’m in awe of Bob [Redford], so whatever they ask me to do, I do,” said Oldham, referring to the founder of the Sundance Film Festival. The designs include Sundance T-shirts, sweatshirts, snow globes, hats, totes, postcards and posters commemorating 30 years of the festival. Oldham said he’s been involved with Sundance for over 10 years and the last few years has been heavily involved with the merchandise.
Oldham, who runs a graphic and product design company and produces books and children’s toys, said he doesn’t miss the fashion world. After designing a ready-to-wear line for 15 years, he was ready to move on. “I didn’t have the cataclysmic exit from the fashion business. I had a great time. I was always self-owned,” he said.
