Fashion week is not only about models and the runway. Today, senior citizens at the Workmen’s Circle MultiCare Center in the Bronx will be getting beauty makeovers, courtesy of the GlamourGals nonprofit teen organization. More than 40 female residents of the center, located at 3155 Grace Avenue, will receive facials and manicures as part of Grandparents Day, provided by the GlamourGals volunteers including students from Lehman High School.
“Billy Crystal had this expression, ‘You look marvelous,’ and we all felt that this resounded deeply with the meaning behind our event with GlamourGals,” said Larry Abrams, head Administrator at Workmen’s Circle MultiCare Center. “No matter how young or old we are, feeling like we look ‘marvelous’ translates into feeling better about ourselves. When another person spends time to help someone look better, that payoff is tenfold, for the individual as well as the community. Fashion week is wonderful in so many ways, but it traditionally focuses on highlighting a very specific vision of what ‘beautiful’ is. Nothing is more important than reminding every member of our community that they are appreciated, beautiful and yes, marvelous.”
