PAPER PLAY: Philip Treacy has teamed with Asprey to create a limited edition, high-end Christmas cracker that comes complete with a paper pop-up hat and a solid silver thimble. The 80 handmade crackers are made from silver card and boast dramatic 3-D bows made from rapid prototyping machines — but they don’t come cheap. Where the average Marks & Spencer cracker costs about 80 pence, or $1.28 at current exchange, this one is priced at a cool 1,500 pounds, or $2,400, and will go on sale in November.
“I love Christmas and I am obsessed with Christmas decorations — I collect vintage ones,” said Treacy. He said the cracker will break open with a big pop rather than the usual limp “pfffffff,” but he wouldn’t reveal the jokes — something that is tucked inside even the humblest cracker. “I’m working on them with an international comedian,” he said, adding that one of the 80 will also contain a Willy Wonka-style winning ticket for a free bespoke hat.
