Paul Smith to Show at Japan Fashion Week

The designer will present his spring-summer collections for men and women.

HEADING EAST: Paul Smith will present his spring collection at Tokyo Fashion Week next month, event organizers said.

Smith will fly to Tokyo for the show, which will take place Oct. 16, kicking off the week’s seven-day run, at the Tokyo Midtown development. It will recap the men’s and women’s spring-summer season. The men’s collection was shown in Paris in June and the women’s collection will bow this Sunday in London.

The designer has a long relationship in Japan, where he has a licensing agreement with Itochu and a network of 200 stores. It’s his brand’s biggest market, with Britain coming in at number two.

The upcoming fashion week in Tokyo is this city’s first since the earthquake and tsunami forced the cancellation of the March shows. It is also the first incarnation of the event under the sponsorship of Mercedes-Benz.

Meanwhile, one can expect a seamless finish to Arte’s latest documentary “Gentleman Designer,” which shadows Smith in his rounds of daily life and work. Filmed by Stéphane Carrel, the film will air on the Franco-German TV channel on Nov. 22, with a DVD set to be released on Nov. 28, retailing for 20 euros, or $27. An accompanying book, called “Paul Smith, Notes,” features an interview between Smith and French journalist Olivier Wicker, who works for French daily newspaper Liberation.
