PERRY’S BOOK: Perry Ellis’ impact on American sportswear earned him a place in fashion history books. Now, 26 years after his death, Jeffrey Banks, Doria de La Chapelle and Erica Lennard, the photographer behind many of Ellis’ campaigns, are putting together a coffee-table book on Ellis and his work. The idea of “Perry Ellis: An American Original” (the working title) came to Banks and de La Chapelle when they were putting together “Preppy,” their most recent book, and looking to include images of Ellis’ work. “We wanted to use a couple of pictures of Perry, and could not find them,” Banks said. “Someone suggested we call Erica Lennard. She kept everything.”
The authors are currently knee-deep in the research phase and already spoke to a wide range of people, from Barbara Gallagher, who had a daughter, Tyler, with the designer, to Polly Mellen, Grace Mirabella, Patricia Pastor, Isaac Mizrahi and Patricia Underwood. The book is slated to be published by Rizzoli for fall 2013.
