PREMIUM PICKS: Tuesday’s Premium Young Designer Awards helped kicked off Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with a surprising mix of playful picks. The prize for women’s wear was scooped up by Belgian designer Tom Van Der Borght for his unisex looks that included duvet coats and wildly patterned skirts, capes and jackets for what he called “a humorous take on our apocalyptic times.” The voluminous designs were paired with spiky shoulder and head gear and high wooden shoes for the awards presentation.
Color and print were also at play in the looks from men’s wear winner Asger Juel Larsen of Denmark, who paired flame prints and safety neon orange and yellow with basic black and metallic plates on wool caps and shoes — sports wear with an accent on motor sports. Larsen’s road warriors looked ready to roll in bomber jackets, hooded down coats, and drop crotch skinny pants.
The cute and feminine handbags of Italy’s Benedetta Bruzziches won the accessories nod, with upholstered, quilted, sparkly and metallic touches. Bruzziches said she wanted her designs to help people “remember moments of happiness,” pointing in particular to a small rose gold clutch tied with a bow she said was modeled on packets of sweet treats from her childhood.
All of the winners will be given exhibition space at the next Premium trade show in July and a presence in its F95 Fashion Store. Additionally, this season’s winners will also be sold in Berlin’s Galeries Lafayette.
