QUICK SHAVE: Say goodbye to The Police — and the beard. Sting, who appeared onstage sporting a salt-and-pepper beard at Madison Square Garden for the band’s final performance Thursday night, reappeared sans whiskers for the show’s encore. ARMANI’S MERMAID: Giorgio Armani is to dress South African swimmer and Prince Albert of Monaco’s squeeze Charlene Wittstock when she’s not in the pool at various events during the Beijing Olympics.
A LUXURY RIDE: Giorgio Armani isn’t the only Italian brand aiming to outfit a chic Olympian. Loro Piana will outfit Italy’s eventing and dressage teams with tailcoats, sweatshirts, polos, T-shirts and caps for the riders and saddle pads and blankets for the horses. “Equestrian disciplines are a family passion and well reflect our company’s values: elegance, tradition and discipline aimed at achieving a better result and sportsmanship,” said Pier Luigi Loro Piana, chief executive officer and chairman of the luxury brand. “We are proud to ‘accompany’ the Italian teams to Beijing, our fourth games.”
His brother Sergio Loro Piana, co-chairman, added, “We are sentimentally linked to the Olympics not only for their level of competition and international challenge, but also because the first finished item we manufactured was our Horsey Jacket, ad hoc designed for the Barcelona 1992 games. And it changed the history of our company.”
