RALPH’S WINNING RIDE: Ralph Lauren’s sharp eye for classic cars helped him take home the Coppa d’Oro award at the Concorso d’Eleganza 2013 in Cernobbio, Italy. The designer’s wife, Ricky, and other family members shared in the celebration at the event’s gala Saturday at Villa D’Este. His prizewinning Bugatti 57SC Atlantic was also on the grounds when Lauren was honored by Danilo Zucchetti, Villa D’Este general manager. Before the fireworks flared, the New Yorker thanked his wife and children for being his best friends in what one guest described as “one of the event’s most touching moments.”
Addressing the crowd from the garden terrace overlooking Lake Como, Lauren said, “I return to Villa d’Este after 15 years, I did not remember the extent of how beautiful and unique Villa d’Este is…the hotel, the people, the food…being here at this event within this fantastic surrounding is a graceful gift.”

Others might have said the same about his wheels, which were first ordered by Richard B. Pope of London in 1937 and later acquired by Lauren in 1988. Of the 680 Type 57 Bugattis ever produced, just more than 40 were the 57S/SC, and only three were the rare Atlantics. Coupe-loving fans can find a limited-edition model replica of Lauren’s prized Bugatti on his company’s Web site for $9,500.
