LONDON — The Duke of Cambridge on Thursday night paid tribute to the late Nelson Mandela after attending the London premiere of “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” with the Duchess of Cambridge.
“We were just reminded of what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was, and my thoughts and prayers are with him and his family right now,” he told the BBC after the screening, flanked by his wife. Mandela died on Thursday at the age of 95 at his home in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Earlier in the evening, the Duchess of Cambridge appeared on the red carpet in Leicester Square decked in a floor-length, cream Roland Mouret gown with a long slit up the front. The couple met the film’s stars, Idris Elba and Naomie Harris, and Mandela’s daughter Zindzi Mandela before the 2013 Royal Film Performance.
The Royal Film Performance raises funds each year for the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, which supports industry employees and their families who are in need.
Kate shopped her closet for the evening, having worn the long cream gown, known as the Lombard dress, to Claridge’s in May 2012 to attend a private dinner and a meeting of the Thirty Club, a group of media and advertising high-fliers.
