RENT THE RUNWAY’S NEW HIRE: Rent the Runway has tapped Lucy Sykes Rellie as fashion director. She originally joined the company six months ago in a consulting capacity, and in her new role, Rellie will be the Web site’s leading stylist, and act as a designer liaison and spokeswoman. Jennifer Hyman, chief executive officer and co-founder of the site that launched in November 2009, told WWD that Rellie’s “unmatched seasoned eye for style [will] make an immediate impact on our brand.” Rellie has worked with TJ Maxx, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren and served as Marie Claire’s fashion director from 2001 to 2007. She also designed a line of children’s clothing and contributed to Allure, Town & Country and the now-defunct Cookie.
Renttherunway.com boasts about 2 million members and is growing at a rate of more than 100,000 members a month who rent dresses and accessories from the over 150 designers available on the site. It shipped about 12,600 dresses for New Year’s Eve this month, double the amount shipped for the holiday last year — which brought the site to nearly 75 percent inventory utilization. The company even opened an in-house dry cleaning facility to keep up with the demand and turn product faster. This means that 10 percent of product gets cleaned and reshipped the same day it’s received from a customer.
