Revamped ASVOFF Kicks Off in Tokyo

Diane Pernet was on hand for the launch of the festival with a new location and new promotional team.

NEW DIRECTIONS: Diane Pernet is back in Tokyo with a new and improved version of her fashion film festival.

The fashion critic and video journalist kicked off the fifth installment of A Shaded View on Fashion Film (ASVOFF) with a party Friday night in the fashion-centric Aoyama area. The festival, with a new host location and new promotional team, will run through Dec. 1.

Films on show were selected from ASVOFF’s Paris festival and include in-competition films, out-of-competition films and short documentaries.

“Part of the reason I really want to have the festival here is to encourage more participants, because normally Japan is so ahead of everybody else, but in fashion film, not really,” Pernet remarked.

“And I don’t understand that, so we gave a different approach this year, maybe we would inspire fashion brands and directors to submit. That’s the idea,” she said.
