BERLIN — There was an international flair to this year’s Premium Young Designer Awards on Tuesday, which helped kick off Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.
The prize for women’s wear went to Moscow’s Julia Seregina for her innovative knitwear Smart Knits, which the designer said uses varied stitch sizes and yarn gauges to help cocoon the female form. That was evident in one standout look, a sculpted strapless dress with a puffy skirt. Seregina started her ecologically oriented label just six months ago after switching from a marketing career.
Men’s wear kudos went to Breaks London, the creation of Japanese designers Ryo Yamazaki and Kohji Yanagi. They take classic British bespoke and make it Savile rock — trench coats gone rogue with a punky twist and silver-colored leather sleeveless jackets.
For accessories, eyewear brand Kuboraum got the gold. Berlin-based Italian designer Livio Graziottin prefers to call his bold geometric black-framed glasses and sunglasses “masks,” and designs with the motto “Dreamed in Berlin, handmade in Italy.”
All of the winners will be given exhibition space at the next Premium trade show in January and a presence in its F95 Fashion Store.
