The artist, illustrator and photographer said the Eighties-flavored collection harked back to the insouciant era when he first designed T-shirts for Joseph in London. “No one really does anything for fun nowadays,” he lamented. “It’s a survival course.” Warming to his theme, Roberts — who was replaced last year as fashion director of Vanity Fair magazine — compared the fashion world to a jungle.
“Fashion has become very brutal, starting with the toll it took on magazines,” he mused. “There’s a panic. On the one hand it’s a weird world that survives on luxury and glamour and sophistication, on the other hand it’s kind of right down there in the jungle with wild beasts and ravening animals who are savaging each other.”
