RODARTE’S DON: Rodarte designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy are designing for the stage yet again — their operatic costume debut, though their maternal grandmother was an opera singer — for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s production of “Don Giovanni” starring Mariusz Kwiecien.
The designers are collaborating with Swarovski, having previously worked together on various fashion week collections, an Atelier Swarovski by Rodarte line and, of course, the Swan Lake costumes for Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan.” Six showpiece costumes in “Don Giovanni,” including the headpieces, gowns and wigs of characters Donna Elvira, Zerlina and Donna Anna, incorporate over 130,000 Swarovski Elements.

“It took a while to understand the characters, their motivations and what we wanted to visualize. Frank [Gehry, who is designing the sets] told us from the beginning that it was about the music, and our job was to help that. The costumes are the kind of thing that you want to lift the music — you don’t want to compete or kill it,” said Kate Mulleavy.
Performances of “Don Giovanni” — the first installment of a three-year Mozart/Da Ponte opera project —will run from Friday to May 26 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.
