EYE OF DESIGN: While in Milan for Design Week, Israeli designer and artist Ron Arad, who took part in the international furniture fair Salone del Mobile with a special installation for Jean Nouvel’s “Project: Office for Living,” found the time to present his latest PQ eyewear collection on Tuesday at luxury eyewear store Punto Ottico. In keeping with the first collection launched in 2012, the new “Springs & Swings” range features an ample selection of frames with PQ’s A-shaped wire structure in the middle, allowing the wearer to move the lenses for a custom fit. Arad also added “Sintered Corbs,” one-part frames made using selective laser sintering, a process originally developed to produce prototypes quickly and that Arad has frequently used on objects ranging from vases and lights to jewelry pieces.
“My approach to design and to eyewear is the same because it’s always about doing what hasn’t been done before,” said Arad, noting that people do not choose all of the objects that surround them, but their choice of eyewear is highly intimate as glasses “are an extension of people’s personality.”
Asked about his biggest current challenge, he said: “Doing things that I’m interested in, that I like and that I can sell.” Mission accomplished, considering the number of people trying on his glasses in the boutique.
“I have to say that I don’t like to go in stores, I prefer to bump into people wearing my glasses on the street or on the bus,” Arad admitted.
