CLASS IS IN SESSION: Ruben and Isabel Toledo will be opening up their studio on Jan. 8 to lead a one-day workshop for New York City teachers. The Academy for Teachers’ Sam Swopes recruited the husband-and-wife team to teach a Master Class for 18 educators of varying disciplines and levels. Ruben Toledo said he and his wife will draw from their “experiences growing up like wild weeds in New York City — the brightest and best ‘school’ one could ever hope for.” They will also offer tips about “the value of free range creativity – organic unstructured learning — and the value of using fashion as a language especially for kids to help them understand these symbols we all wear and communicate through.” he said.
With their “Everything is Useful: Creativity, Inspiration and Collaboration” program, the Toledos will be joining the ranks of Gloria Steinem, Stephen Sondheim and Henry Louis Gates Jr. as Academy for Teachers’ alum. But this week’s students won’t be roughing it in any cafeteria — their lunch with the Toledos will be held on the NoMad Hotel’s rooftop.
