STARRY SELFRIDGES: “Journey to the Stars” is the retailer’s theme this season, with the Christmas star, astrology and constellations all providing inspiration.
Each of the 12 windows stretching from Oxford Street to Orchard Street features a zodiac sign styled with its corresponding planet.
Working with the Greenwich Observatory, a rotating solar system model was created to scale. Ten thousand star fixtures were used to create the window designs with 4,409 pounds of glitter and 4,409 pounds of salt used to create the flooring.
Maiko Takeda — known for making the headpieces worn by Björk on her Biophilia tour — designed the headpiece used in the Scorpio window. The mermaid tails in the Pisces window were comprised of 3,000 scales embellished with 15,000 crystals.
“We are very excited about our festive Journey to the Stars theme this year, which has allowed us to creatively explore the realm of constellation and astrology,” said Linda Hewson, creative director of Selfridges. “They are timeless and relentlessly fascinating to so many people. Above all the theme gave us the opportunity to design startling displays, in-store experiences and product collaborations full of sparkle, stardust and fun.”
