THE RIGHT FLUFF: Designer Hannah Weiland grew up with a menagerie of pets, and her Shrimps label derives from a childhood nickname. She launched last year and ships to stores including Opening Ceremony. March will see an exclusive with Net-a-Porter. She has also made a quirky fashion film featuring Laura Bailey that debuted online on Friday.
“Perhaps my obsession with fluffy animals is the reason why Shrimps came about — I’m imitating the animals I grew up with,” said the designer, presenting her first full collection in London via private appointments.
Her vibrant and tactile jackets, stoles and bags are made from modacrylic, a synthetic fiber, and come in colors ranging from pastel to bright.
Items are all named after dogs. Her initial styles were named after her two Cockapoos, Wilma and Doris: “I came up with the idea because Wilma was almost exactly the same color as my camel coat,” she explained.
The jackets’ linings draw inspiration from her British childhood with the collage artwork of Eduardo Paolozzi, cartoons and doodles.
The film, “Shrimps World,” stars Bailey and involves a caravan, quad bikes and pugs wearing fur collars.
