SKIN DEEP: The American Skin Association hosted its 13th Annual Gala at The Plaza hotel last week, presenting seven awards and raising more than $500,000. Dr. John Parrish, chief executive officer of the Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology, received the 2011 Humanitarian Award, and Deborah Norville, anchor of “Inside Edition,” was honored with the Education Award.

Rosemary Harris and Tony Roberts served as emcees at the event, which was co-sponsored this year by boutique M&A firm Ohana & Co. (The association recently appointed Karine Ohana, a managing partner at the firm, to its education council.) Howard P. Milstein, chairman of the ASA and chair, president and ceo of New York Private Bank & Trust, presented the awards. Together with his wife, Abby, Milstein also helms the Howard and Abby Milstein Foundation, which brings the principles of venture capitalism to philanthropy. The couple in 2008 established the Abby S. and Howard P. Milstein Innovation Award for Melanoma/Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Research at the American Skin Association.

The money raised by the event, in addition to raising funds for skin disease research, will help underwrite educational outreach programs for students on the dangers of sun exposure and skin disease.
