DEAR DIARY: Sigmund Freud, Dita Von Teese, Erdem Moralioglu and Katharine Hepburn may seem a disparate bunch, but they all had at least one thing in common: Their Smythson Panama diaries. The famous figures are also the subject of a series of works by British illustrator and filmmaker Quentin Jones that will go on display Monday at Smythson’s New Bond Street store.
Jones has made individual collages based on some of the Panama’s best-known customers and, in some cases, incorporated bits of their old diaries. In addition, each collage features a letter of the alphabet and together they spell out Smythson.
“It’s paint, it’s paper, it’s not digital or slick or computerized,” said Rory O’Hanlon, the brand’s design director. “The images are playful, and we’re sharing what Smythson has been, what it is, and what it will be.”
The exhibition is to remain at the New Bond Street flagship for a week and then tour Smythson stores worldwide. O’Hanlon said the images would not be sold. In another part of the store, Smythson has displayed some of the Panama diaries in their entirety, including Hepburn’s, open to the page where she’s scribbled down the phone numbers of friends including Spencer Tracy.
