SO ICY: On Monday night at The Standard hotel’s seasonal ice rink, a handful of New York’s more sociable types joined the ranks — some 16,000 strong — of amateur curlers in America.
Champagne maker Veuve Clicquot enlisted a team of ambassadors from the Norfolk Curling Club in Norfolk, Conn., to teach the proud, if oft-misunderstood, ice sport to a group that included Helen Lee Schifter, Claude Morais and Peter Davis. Other partygoers, such as Padma Lakshmi, waited for the stones to clear off the ice for the free skate period of the program. More still kept off the ice altogether, opting for the comfort of a cordoned-off section of the lobby and passed hors d’oeuvres.
Though a bit of a strange sight in the Meatpacking District, the demo made a certain sense. Curling is an intensely social sport, as several of the Norfolk club’s members pointed out to those who did take a shot at sliding the stones and sweeping the ice. When one participant’s broom fell to the ice, several club members extolled those around the rink to drink. A quick survey of the crowd showed no one had needed much enticement.
