NEW START: Sonia Rykiel is getting a new home in New York.

The 1,900-square-foot unit, facing Lanvin and Valentino, is replacing Kent & Curwen at 816 Madison Avenue and is slated to open in February.

In addition to the French brand’s main collection, including ready-to-wear, fur, leather goods and shoes, the new venue will also carry children’s wear along with special items designed exclusively for the location by artistic director Julie de Libran.

This is the brand’s first opening of a free-standing unit in North America following its 2012 acquisition by First Heritage Brands.

Sonia Rykiel had previously operated a shop at 849 Madison Avenue, which closed in May 2011.

The opening marks the beginning of “a global acceleration strategy for Sonia Rykiel in the U.S. market,” a spokeswoman for the brand confirmed.
