Stella McCartney Hits Milan

Designer refurbishes store and shows spring looks.

GREEN MACHINE: “It’s basically three guys in a Swedish forest,” said Stella McCartney, describing the source of the recyclable tiles she’s just had installed in her newly refurbished Milan store. “It’s called Baux [Träullit], and it’s the first time I’ve used it. We put the tiles up the staircase and I wanted to see them for myself,” said McCartney, describing the material that’s made partly from the pulp of Swedish spruces.

McCartney also had Italian greens on her mind Monday night during a party she hosted at the Orto Botanico di Brera, an historic garden in the center of town that belongs to Milan’s university. In between the medicinal plants, vegetable patches and flower beds, McCartney’s team had planted pizza, ice cream, lemonade and Campari stands and hired a Dixieland band, while models dressed in McCartney’s resort collection mingled with guests.

“It’s the first time we’ve held our garden party outside New York and the first time we’ve done it in Europe,” said McCartney. “The collection is about having a spring in your step — it’s meant to be humorous and fun.”

McCartney is headed back to London on Tuesday, and she’s then off to Asia for work. However, a trip to the Glastonbury music festival could also be on the cards. “I’m debating it — I love a bit of Glasto,” she said.
