STRATEAS.CARLUCCI WINS: Two-year-old Melbourne brand Strateas.Carlucci has won the Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award at the Melbourne Fashion Festival. Presented on Tuesday at Tiffany’s Collins Street, Melbourne flagship, designer duo Peter Strateas and Mario-Luca Carlucci beat finalists Bul, Christina Exie, Haryono Setiadi, Livia Arena and Pageant to win prizes including 10,000 Australian dollars (or $9,061 at current exchange), a trip to New York and a one-month pop-up shop at Westfield Doncaster.
Launched in 1997, the Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award is Australia’s longest-running emerging designer competition, open to designers in their first five years of business. Known for their dark, androgynous tailoring, Strateas and Carlucci were also regional finalists in the 2014 edition of the International Woolmark Prize and finalists in the 2014 BT Emerging Designer Awards.
Now in its 18th year, the consumer-focussed festival runs from March 17 to 23 at various venues in and around Melbourne, showcasing a mix of runway shows from local fashion names such as Josh Goot, Toni Maticevksi, Willow, Aurelio Costarella, camilla & marc and Alex Perry, as well as a series of marketing and business seminars. International guests and speakers include Eva Longoria, Dawn and Samantha Goldworm from olfactive branding firm 12.29, Christian Bassett Learning managing director Christian Ettinger, the Ethical Fashion Initiative’s Simone Cipriani, Maiyet co-founder and chief executive Paul van Zyl and Farfetch ceo/founder José Neves.
Georgia May Jagger was due to be the festival’s biggest drawcard, as the runway star of Wednesday night’s Camilla show. Upon learning the news of the death of her father’s longtime partner L’Wren Scott when landing in Sydney on Tuesday morning, however, Jagger cancelled her appearance and boarded the next flight back to New York.
