ART PROJECT: Swarovski is preparing to unveil its second design exhibit in Beijing, its first-ever featuring work from local Chinese designers.
Due to launch at the end of September, the exhibit will be part of Beijing Design Week. The pieces will be showcased at 751 D-Park, a converted exhibit space that was formerly a power plant. The space is located in a converted industrial area that’s now home to many Beijing design and art studios and galleries.
Swarovski has commissioned art pieces from four Chinese artists, all Beijing-based, in honor of Beijing Design Week. Two of the artists, Shi Jiamin and Song Tao are established while the other two Liu Feng and Naihan Li are younger, emerging artists. All will be exploring the concept of memory in the digital age. The exhibit is curated by Jerome Sans, co-founder of Perfect Crossovers, a consulting office specializing in cultural projects between China and the rest of the world.
“We are delighted to expand the scope of Swarovski Digital Crystal to include both Eastern and Western perspectives. It is an honour to work with some of the most brilliant talents in the Chinese design community and to be part of Beijing Design Week,” Nadja Swarovski, member of the Swarovski executive board, said in a prepared statement.
The upcoming Beijing exhibit will also feature works from western designers including Arik Levy, Maarten Baas, Random International and Ron Arad, which were exhibited at the London Design Museum in September.
Swarovski was last in Beijing in October with an exhibit that was also displayed in Hong Kong and Singapore. That exhibit showcased collaborations with designers and artists such as Yoko Ono and Mary Katrantzou. The company works with about 100 designers a year, selected by Nadja Swarovski, and has been looking to work more with Asian designers and artists.
Swarovski has a significant retail presence in Asia. Of its approximately 2,350 stores worldwide, 770 stores are located in the Asia Pacific region, outnumbered only by Europe, which has approximately 1,110 stores. The company has collaborated with Asian designers in the past for jewelry pieces and is considered one of the top three jewelry brands in China.
