SWEET DAY: In celebration of Mother’s Day, contemporary designer Rebecca Taylor has teamed with New York’s Billy’s Bakery to design a capsule collection of limited edition cupcakes. The Vanilla Twinkle cupcake — made of yellow cake with blue vanilla butter cream and a sprinkle of white crystal sugar and silver candy dots — is inspired by a blue dot chiffon dress from the designer’s spring 2009 runway. The Mocha Meow cupcake — a chocolate cupcake with mocha-flavored butter cream topped with chocolate sprinkles — resembles the leopard-print pieces in the collection. “I have quite a sweet tooth,” the designer said of the collaboration. “I love baking at home with my family and creating a tasty treat for Mother’s Day felt natural. Billy’s has truly mastered the art of delicious baked goods, and we had a lot of fun translating some of our spring-summer looks into cupcakes.” The Rebecca Taylor Mother’s Day cupcakes are $2.75 each.
MAN AT WORK: The show will go on for Pierre Cardin. After a stint in the hospital due to a fractured shoulder from a recent fall, the octogenarian designer is back in his château, Lacoste, and will soon resume preparations for his annual classical music festival there, a house spokesman confirmed. The event kicks off July 3.
IN CONCERT: Prior to the Paris leg of Beyoncé Knowles’ “I Am…Sasha Fierce” world tour Tuesday night, Thierry Mugler, sitting in the audience, lauded the singer. “She’s a great lady — really talented, a real stage animal,” he said. Mugler is the tour’s creative adviser, in charge of everything from costumes to sets and lights. He said he would also be directing some upcoming projects, including a musical and a “light” revue.
JEWELED NOTES: Fashion jewelry company Carolee is partnering with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation to create a limited edition collection of its classic Sterling Sentiments bangle bracelets. Each silver bangle is inscribed with a quote from a female musician, ranging from Natasha Bedingfield, whose piece reads, “No one else can speak the words on your lips,” to India.Arie, whose bangle reads “Love Yourself.” Other participating divas include Estelle, Kellie Pickler and Patti LaBelle. Ten percent of retail sales from the collection will be donated to the VH1 foundation, which benefits music education programs in public schools across the U.S. The collection hits fine department and specialty stores and will be available on carolee.com in September. Each bracelet retails for $100.
VALENTINO’S LATEST GIG: The Vienna Philharmonic New Year’s Concert may be getting a fashionable touch in 2010, as couturier Valentino Garavani is in talks to design costumes for the traditional event. Broadcast in more than 50 countries, the concert is held in the Austrian city every year on the morning of Jan. 1.
WITH HONORS: Next Thursday, Parsons The New School for Design will be staging the AAS Line Debut — its annual fashion show showcasing the work of graduates from the AAS program, which is designed for people who seek a career change. This year’s event, to be held at the rooftop terrace at Lord & Taylor, will feature a new element with the school’s first AAS Icon Award. Betsey Johnson will be on hand to give the award to Fern Mallis, senior vice president of IMG Fashion. It won’t be the only award that night. Jen Kao, an alum of the program, will receive the Stacey Nipps Alumni award and a special Swarovski Award will go to one of the graduating students for best accessory design.
