Thirteen-year-old Tavi Gevinson bailed out of school this week to size up the latest and greatest of the New York collections for her fashion blog, Tavi-thenewgirlintown. Before taking nonstop notes during Maria Cornejo’s show Monday, the Chicagoan said, “Alexander Wang just gets better and better. And Y-3 was terrific.”

A die-hard fan of Rei Kawakubo, the diminutive teenager said she favors mostly hand-me-downs and vintage finds. Dressed in a mandarin jacket with an upside-down doll in the breast pocket, a miniskirt, shredded woolen fishnets and Lilliputian suede shoes, Gevinson explained that she offset “the regal look with bold shoulders and little heels.”

When a fashion editor likened her style to Anna Piaggi’s, she said: “Thank you. I consider that quite a compliment.”

But playing hooky in New York wasn’t all fun and games, Gevinson said she also was doing some freelance for Pop magazine. As for what the kids back in the Windy City make of her precocious pursuits, the eighth grader said: “A lot of them don’t get it, but some do.”
