An auction held by Tajan in Paris with Stiletto fashion magazine raised 102,800 euros, or $141,117 at current exchange, for the nonprofit organization Cosmetic Executive Women.
Multiples of 10 ruled the event: Auction house Tajan was feting its decade under the auspices of Rodica Seward, while Stiletto celebrated its first decade in existence. They asked 10 luxury goods makers and 10 designers and contemporary artists to conceive works for the charity event. These included Ralph Lauren, Christian Louboutin, Tod’s, Christian Dior, Hublot, Louis Vuitton and Viktor & Rolf.
The idea was to celebrate beauty, said Laurence Benaïm, founder and editor in chief of Stiletto. She added: “Beauty in every sense, luxury in all senses — luxury in experience, in savoir-faire, in the métier.”
Bidding for a crystal-and-velvet calfskin mule based on an 8-inch-high vodka glass — designed by Michel Vivien and made by Baccarat — started at 500 euros, or around $687 at current exchange. It swiftly rose to 1,000 euros, then continually notched upward to close at 2,600 euros, or $3,571.
A two-tier, rough-hewn, aluminum-cast table by Mattia Bonetti opened at 3,000 euros, or $4,120, only to be sold at 11,000 euros, or $15,107, mere seconds later.
Other lots included hand-made buffalo horn sunglasses from Maison Bonnet, a pair of leather pumps with multicolored embroidery by Dior and a ceramic watch with a red band by Hublot.
Ten prominent people offered “privileged moments” as auction lots. Marie-Louise de Clermont-Tonnerre was to host a visit to Coco Chanel’s private apartment, Alber Elbaz offered a coffee klatch to discuss fashion, and Olivier Echaudemaison, a makeup lesson. CEW was created in 1986 and counts 450 members. In France, it has established 25 beauty centers whose activities include beauty care and olfactory workshops.
Françoise Montenay, CEW chairman and president of Chanel’s supervisory board, spoke of the importance of giving patients tranquility and reminded attendees that good morale helps in the fight against illness.
