Chris Evert, Ellesse Fete New Partnership

In addition to taking a minority ownership in the heritage tennis brand, the tennis star will also design a new line of clothing.

TALKED OUT: After two weeks of working for ESPN, covering the US Open, Chris Evert caught the last set of the match between Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal on Friday evening at a tony tennis club on the Upper East Side. “I’m pretty tired of talking,” Evert admitted, as fans were approaching. She was on hand at an event to celebrate her new minority ownership in Ellesse, a heritage tennis brand that had its heyday back in the Seventies and Eighties. The label is being revived by former Danskin chief Byron Hero and consultants Mortimer Singer and Jill Fairchild, who were among the host committee along with Cristina Cuomo, Ann Caruso and Ashley Holzer. Evert will also design a new line of clothing for Ellesse, set to make its debut early next year. Evert said she wants to design pieces for the woman over 30. “I wore the clothes for 15 years on the circuit. I was always the best dressed tennis player,” she said, adding that she wore pink in every final.

While Evert plans to be heavily involved the design process, she professed to be intimidated by fashion, in general. “It scares me a little bit,” she said. “I like to blend in, you know?” Really? After all, she was wearing an eye-catching, tight red dress from Michael Kors. “Well, it’s the plunging necklines that make me nervous,” she said.
