TALKING IT OVER: Now that the long-awaited garment center survey by the Municipal Art Society is out, workshops are being planned to hash out the various recommendations. Key factory owners, city officials, school leaders, policy makers, designers and artists will be rounded up for a meeting at Parsons The New School for Design later this year. The Design Trust for Public Space’s Jerome Chou said the aim of the upcoming workshops will be to get everyone thinking holistically about the neighborhood.
Joerg Schwartz and Yeohlee Teng were on hand Friday for the release of the report. The timing is good, considering how there is a national conversation about creating and saving jobs, Teng said. However, when the subject is manufacturing jobs, “why not show a photograph of a garment factory for a change?” Teng said. “Our national policy doesn’t take into account small farmers and people who make things. But then look at the locally grown movement and how well that’s gone.”
