LOOK AT THE EARS: New York Fashion Week may be all about the clothes, but attendees of the Thakoon show should keep an eye out for some special bling.
This season Thakoon Panichgul will be sending models down the runway in Tasaki by Thakoon earrings. The designer has collaborated with the Japanese jeweler since 2009, resulting in six namesake collections, as well as a creative director title for Panichgul, yet Sunday will mark the first time both projects collide.
So why now? “The idea has come up in the past, and I never wanted to force it,” the designer said. “I was looking at the fabrics and the embroidery effects and realized it’s kind of like what we’re doing for Taski in terms of the palette and effects, so I kind of explored from there.”
The resulting collection is a pair of ear cuffs, designed in yellow gold with yellow sappire, hauynite and alexandrite, and white gold with freshwater pearls, diamonds and grey diamonds.
“It is a cuff because we had to come up with an idea to make it stay in place,” the designer explained. “It’s a pierced earring but it wasn’t going to hold the weight of the metal and the pearls and the diamonds. That’s how the cuff came about.”
Panichgul was also quick to credit the Tasaki team for a seamless integration of the two endeavours.
“They’re so good at just jumping when you say ‘jump.’ They want you to experiment, they want new ideas, they want to work hard and they want to make it happen.”
