THE GLORY OF ROME: Restoration on the Colosseum is finally set to begin in early December, courtesy of Tod’s SpA and its sponsorship of 25 million euros, or $30.7 million at current exchange. The first phase of the works will end in mid-2015, followed by two other stages expected to end by 2017, but the monument will remain open to visitors throughout. This is the first restoration that will cover the entire amphitheater. During a press conference held in Rome Tuesday with the city’s Mayor Gianni Alemanno and other dignitaries, Tod’s chairman and chief executive officer Diego Della Valle underscored how there is no commercial intent in the sponsorship, which has been undertaken for “pure patronage.”

“Tod’s is proud to support this project contributing to an improved conservation of one of the symbols of Italy in the world and to the further diffusion of our culture internationally,” said Della Valle. “I hope this operation can further stimulate tourism in our country, thus creating opportunities of employment in a sector that surely sees us as undisputed world leaders, and work as a stimulus for the many Italian and foreign companies that care about the wonders of our artistic patrimony.”
The works will increase the space that can be visited by 25 percent.
