FOR A CAUSE: After last year’s annual Autumn Party, Rochelle Gores Fredston recalled, “The next morning, I woke up to a big piece of art on my wall.” Turns out her husband, David Fredston, had bid on and won the Jeff Hamilton work unbeknownst to her. On Wednesday night during this year’s version of the party in West Hollywood, Calif., at The London Hotel, which was attended by more than 400 people, including Sophia Bush, Brittany Snow, Garcelle Beauvais and Hannah Simone, and featured a runway presentation of J. Mendel’s 2013 resort collection, Gores Fredston surmised the same thing could very well happen again. “I do the mingling, and he does the bidding,” she said. Thankfully, it’s all for a good cause, as the event and the silent auction at it was put on by The Gores Group and Philanthropic Society Los Angeles to benefit Children’s Institute Inc. Gores Fredston, founder of PSLA and a consultant for J. Mendel owner The Gores Group, said the Los Angeles private equity firm would soon add to its portfolio to build a luxury group around J. Mendel and gave her pitch to brands interested. “We don’t just write a check. We allow the designer to be a designer,” she said. Gilles Mendel wasn’t complaining. With The Gores Group’s support, J. Mendel expanded into handbags in the fall and is working on a fragrance, a venture Mendel said he’s enjoying thoroughly. “Well, look at my nose,” he offered as an explanation.
