CHILDHOOD DREAM?: While they met in fourth grade at a Manhattan Beach, Calif., elementary school, Monica Schweiger’s and Kelly Ferris’ career paths took them in vastly different directions. Schweiger ventured into the world of editorial fashion, becoming a fashion editor at New York Magazine and WWD before freelance styling. Ferris went the small business route, owning and managing the bar B-Side in Manhattan’s East Village. Now, the two friends have found common career ground at The Mercantile Shop, a 1,000-square-foot store they have opened in Healdsburg, Calif., a touristy town in the Northern California wine country. Housed in a Quonset hut off the historic 150-year-old Healdsburg Plaza, Schweiger described The Mercantile Shop as a modern general store focusing on high-end basics and whimsical home goods. “With The Mercantile Shop, we’ve created a one stop, highly curated shopping experience showcasing a selection of both independent and international designers,” she said. The store carries approximately 35 brands, including Taylor Stitch, Levi’s Vintage, Paige, 194t, LNA, The West Is Dead, Alternative Apparel and Wren. Prices at The Mercantile Shop range from $5 to $998.
