The Parley Berlin Summit Kicks Off

Pharrell Williams, Fisher Stevens, Fabien Cousteau and Tyson Toussant all spoke on Tuesday.

DEEP DIVE: Pop icon Pharrell Williams hosted the opening of Parley Berlin, a summit at the Premium fashion fair to explore the fast-growing threat of plastic pollution in the oceans. Fisher Stevens, Fabien Cousteau and Tyson Toussant were among the key speakers joining him Tuesday.

The key idea, they said, is to collect waste from oceans to recycle and reuse to make yarn, fabric and other components used for consumer products.

Williams is a partner in Bionic, a New York-based company producing a patented fourth-generation yarn derived from recycled plastic material. He said: “We can’t lean on our politicians to make change, so this means we have to change our perspective on the importance of saving our planet.”

Tyson Toussant, cofounder of Bionic, said: “Denim will be essential to our line because it appeals to everyone, and we are trying to spread the word everywhere to get people to purchase with purpose.”

Fisher Stevens’ film about oceanographer Dr. Silvia Earle, “Mission Blue,” “was made for schools to inspire kids to get under water and to protect our oceans,” he stated. “Everyone should have awareness about the fish they are eating and about what plastics they use and how these plastics are destroying our oceans.”

Photographer David LaChapelle, H&M’s Margareta Van Den Bosch, inventor Graham Hawkes and activist David de Rothschild are among the speakers slated to participate in Parley Berlin talks this week.
