THE RAIN AND SPAIN: On Tuesday night, the unfavorable weather didn’t stop fashion folks from trekking to the Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, which had invited Council of Fashion Designers of America members to a private viewing of its “Balenciaga: Spanish Master” exhibit. Tory Burch, Diane von Furstenberg, Nicole Miller, Nanette Lepore and Alejandro Ingelmo were among the 40 or so CFDA members who toured the space before sitting down for a private lecture by Hamish Bowles, who co-hosted the event with Oscar de la Renta. “It is perfection, and very informative,” Francisco Costa said. Lepore also found Balenciaga’s designs inspiring, though it’s unlikely she will take cues from the show for her show next month. “It might be a little too late now,” she said.
Bowles, for his part, had spent New Year’s Eve in South Anjuna and decided on the spot to shave off the moustache he had been sporting for the past year. “I think Oscar will be delighted,” he said.
PHILLY’S PREPPY TURN: Tommy Hilfiger will be drumming up excitement in the City of Brotherly Love come April. He’ll be awarded the 2011 Spirit of Design Award at the Philadelphia University Fashion Show on April 30 at the Academy of Music. Past recipients have included Francisco Costa, Mary McFadden, William Calvert and Jay McCarroll. The fashion show, which is part of the university’s gala, “Evening of Innovation,” is an annual event that showcases fashion students’ designs before a crowd of about 2,200 people. “I think it’s incredibly important to give back and to support new designers interested in the fashion industry,” said Hilfiger.
HACK JOB: A throng of well-heeled ladies shuffled out of the January drear and into a virtual spring at Dior’s 57th Street boutique in New York on Wednesday afternoon for a tea and book signing for Jamee Gregory’s “New York Parties: Private Views.” As guests fought off seasonal affective disorder among the floral prints and bright lights, Gregory explained she had been a bit unsure of the turnout, as her e-mail account had recently been hacked. “All of my friends got an e-mail that said, ‘Stay home and make millions,’” the hostess said. “And I said, ‘No! Come to Dior for tea.’ ”
SPANISH EYES: Spanish fashion brand Desigual has teamed up with Christian Lacroix on a capsule collection for fall, unveiled in Barcelona this week. The line is being billed as Desigual by Monsieur Lacroix, as the French designer is no longer authorized to use his full name since leaving the brand he founded. The Barcelona-based company — known for its colorful patchwork looks for women, men and children — said it was made up of some 30 items, including jackets, skirts and lingerie, and would be followed by a larger collection for summer 2012. Lacroix, meanwhile, was in Munich Wednesday doing fittings for “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” (The Capulets and the Montagues), the opera by Vincenzo Bellini.
