THE VIEW FROM THE VERANDA: Tuesday night’s dreary weather didn’t deter guests from weathering the rain to celebrate Danielle Rollins’ new book “Soiree: Entertaining With Style” at Saks Fifth Avenue. The author and Veranda contributing editor was in good company with fellow hosts Lela Rose, Celerie Kemble, Jill Fairchild and Hilary Dick, each of whom decorated a table in their style. A business trip to Spain kept Rachel Roy from cohosting as planned, but the event drew the likes of Susan Gutfreund, Bettina Zilkha and Christopher Burch. Gutfreund said style boils down to good manners.
While signing copies of the book (with perfectly matching blue Sharpie pens), Rollins said inviting the right mix of people helps guarantee a good time. “It’s always about your guests. Being a gracious and happy hostess makes for happy guests. You always want to make every person feel as though they are the most important person in the room,” she said.
As for any missteps to avoid when planning a party, Rollins said, “Boring people and bad attitudes — that’s pretty much it.”
And while some hostesses might be embarrassed, if a guest turns up in the same dress, Rose dealt with such a scenario (never mind one she had designed) with her signature élan. The designer said she told her look-alike friend, “I promised to give her money back.”
