DKNY’s Madison Avenue outpost played host to one of the more extraordinary back-to-school shopping trips of the season on Friday. New York Yankees stars Alex Rodriguez and Robinson Cano accompanied a pair of Bronx sisters as they stocked up for fall. Melida and Johanna Arias have endured several periods of homelessness and two years ago, 21-year-old Johanna had to pass on an acceptance to Syracuse University in order to to support her family. The Yankees and DKNY organized the trip as part of the team’s community outreach-themed HOPE Week. With 17-year-old Melida set to soon enroll in Baruch College, the team and DKNY outfitted the sisters.
“Today we’re just giving them a little helping hand,” said Rodriguez, who shared the car ride from the Bronx with the sisters after surprising Melida at the Wendy’s restaurant where she works.
“I still can’t believe everyone is here,” Melida said in between trips to the fitting room. “I’m so humbled by it.”
