FROM SYDNEY TO PARIS: Move over Collette Dinnigan and Martin Grant — a third Australian is trying to edge in on the Paris show schedule. Sydney-based Perth native Kym Ellery will present her spring 2014 collection at 11.30 a.m. on Sunday at the Hôtel D’Évreux. She isn’t on the official schedule, as are Dinnigan and Grant, but is part of the Chambre Syndicale’s official off-schedule program. It’s a prelude to eventually being allowed to graduate to the main game, hopes Ellery, after 18 months of discussions with Didier Grumbach, president of the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode.
Ellery’s production team includes expat Australian casting director Kannon Rajah and stylist Brana Wolf and to accompany the collection, she will unveil a few pieces from the upcoming 30-piece fine jewelry range that she has designed in collaboration with the 155 year-old Sydney jeweller Fairfax & Roberts. Prices for the range reach 40,000 Australian dollars, or $37,481 at current exchange, for a heavy diamond-set bejewelled cuff or pendant.
The show will cap off a banner year for the 30-year-old former model and fashion director, whose signature sculpted tailoring and embellished statement dresses have attracted the attention of celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Rihanna and Gisele Bündchen — not to mention a high profile Victorian Supreme Court dispute earlier this year when the Myer department store chain sued over a breach of exclusivity contract after Ellery defected to rival David Jones. The case was eventually settled
