THROUGH A GLASS, DARKLY: Paris Photo, the annual fair bringing together more than 120 galleries from around the world, has eschewed a theme this year, instead asking director David Lynch to pick his favorite images on display. The 99 photographs he selected are identified in the fair, which runs from today to Sunday at the Grand Palais, and gathered in a book published by Steidl, on sale for 20 euros, or $25 at current exchange.
Among the fair’s official partners is Giorgio Armani, which is presenting a new selection of photographs on the topic of water. Julien Frydman, director of Paris Photo, said Armani selected the works from proposals by the curators of three guest institutions and exhibiting galleries. “The ‘Acqua #2’ exhibition shows how, when choosing a theme, the wealth of different photographic styles allows us to approach it in a completely new way each time,” Frydman said.

The subject has a special resonance for Armani, whose “Acqua for Life” humanitarian project, in partnership with Green Cross International, aims to provide poor communities around the globe with drinking water.
Paris Photo, which is at the center of a month-long round of photo exhibitions at various locations in Paris, will go transatlantic next year, with its first show at Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles from April 25 to 28.
“We are the only worldwide fair of this scope that allows visitors to discover every facet of photography, and we see that the collectors are here, buying and strengthening their relationship with gallery owners. All the galleries are present, and if they keep coming, it’s because they sell,” Frydman said.
