JAPAN PLAN: As the international fashion pack focuses its attention on the runways of Europe, Tokyo is busy preparing for its own spring-summer edition of the shows.
Tokyo fashion week, which runs Oct. 14 to Oct. 19, will feature the work of 36 brands through shows or presentations. This is down considerably from 48 brands last season and 41 a year ago, but organizers shrugged off the drop at a press briefing on Thursday.
Masahiko Miyake, board chairperson of the Japan Fashion Week Organization, blamed part of the drop in participants on the fact that the Monday of this fashion week coincides with a national holiday. Some observers might question that explanation. (Miyake declined to mention that the spring-summer edition of the Tokyo shows has coincided with the same national holiday for several seasons now- last year’s shows were no exception.)
“Another thing is that we’ve been strict about choosing [the participants],” said Miyake. “We believe [Japan Fashion Week] is continuing to do well, so we don’t think of this as a problem.”
Tokyo fashion week organizers are flying over five buyers from Russia, Saudi Arabia, China and Thailand, as well as bloggers Tommy Ton, Susie Lau and Phil Oh.
As reported, Angela Missoni is flying to Tokyo to kick off Tokyo fashion week. Missoni will stage two shows of its men’s and women’s spring-summer collections on Oct. 14.
