TUMI BRINGS ON GEORGE ESQUIVEL: Tumi will bring on its first new creative director in nearly four years. Footwear designer George Esquivel joined the travel and lifestyle accessories company, and in his new role will impart his creative expertise on the product development and marketing communications sides. “My aim is to marry Tumi’s legacy of craftsmanship and integrity in thoughtful construction with a sense of refreshed youthfulness and beauty through new aesthetics and materials,” Esquivel told WWD. Since its inception in 1975, Tumi has had an internal design team — except for 2007 to 2009, when David Chu served as creative director. But as the brand entered a new phase after an IPO last April and is in the midst of a significant international expansion, chief executive officer and president Jerome Griffith thought it the right time to appoint a creative head to work in tandem with the design team. Esquivel, who splits his time between New York City and Los Angeles, will continue to work on his namesake line, Esquivel.
